Hello from Bristol!

Hi everyone! My name is Chandler Nelson and I am currently a junior at Portland State University. I come from a small town in California called Boulder Creek, but I mostly grew up in the Silicon Valley. After graduating high school, I moved to Rhode Island but ended up transferring to PSU after one year. Right now, I am studying biology, and I hope to be a marine biologist.
This year I am studying in Bristol England. I have been here since September, so this is my seventh month living in  this city. It is about two hours west of London, and only about twenty minutes from Wales. I’m sure that most of you have heard about London and maybe seen it in TV shows, but I am here to tell you that
Bristol is just as amazing! While London has a population of 8.1 million people, Bristol has about 600,000 so it’s definitely smaller but with just as much history, good food, and things to do.
Because of the type of study abroad program that I am doing, I am fully enrolled at the University of Bristol. This means that instead of taking classes with other study abroad students, I am taking classes like a normal UoB student. I've also been able to join (or at least try) lots of clubs while being here like Muay Thai, rock music society, and even the scuba diving club. I even get to live in the dorms with the British students which is so cool since many study abroad programs have all the foreign students live together. Although I was already pretty familiar with British culture before I got here, it has definitely been a learning experience to live with the natives.
Some of my favorite (or favourite, as the British would spell it) things to do in Bristol are explore the city, try new restaurants, go to concerts, and go for jogs by our beautiful harborside. The city is mostly known for its beautiful architecture, music scene, and football (soccer) team. This is the cathedral that I live next to:

This cathedral began construction in 1160 A.D. That’s 332 years before America was even discovered by Columbus, and over 600 years before we officially became a country. That’s an old church!
Bristol also has lots of museums like an art museum, a Palestinian heritage museum, a maritime museum, and many more. It’s a fantastic city and I can’t wait to show you all around!

Just to start us off, here are some fun facts about me:
  • I am a certified rescue diver for scuba diving
  • I have been to 35 states and 22 countries
  • I love outdoor sports like surfing, hiking, and rock climbing
  • I have a cat here in Bristol named Potts
Here is a photo of me on the London Eye:

  4. Hello my name Alex, I enjoy gaming and reading fantasy books. One thing I like about your post is how happy you seem to be about living in Bristol. My question is What is the biggest food chain in England?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Hi Alex! I am very happy in Bristol. England has lots of food chains but I would say the most popular one is Nando's. It's an Indian style chicken restaurant. Sometimes people will ask you if you "fancy a cheeky Nando's" which just means "do you want to go to Nando's". The answer is always yes.

  5. Hello my name is Osvaldo . Do you live in Portland ? in England why do they drink with the penky.

    1. Hi Osvaldo! I only live in Portland during the school year. Normally I live in California. There are a lot of ideas as to why people drank/ate (I say it in the past tense because no one does it anymore) with their pinkies up. The one that makes the most sense dates back to the Roman empire when the elite would eat with only three fingers while the poor people would eat with all five. So in order to look fancy and rich people started to keep their pinky in the air.

  7. Hi my name is greggory. I like playing fortnite. Why is england a country?

    1. Hi Greggory! Wow that is a hard question. I guess the short version is that it became a country because it was convenient for trade. England wasn't always an island so people walked here a very very long time ago. A while later the Romans came in and built a bunch of cities and then decided to stay. England became its own country in the year 937 because before that it was a bunch of independent kingdoms. England's history is very very long but super interesting if you ever have time to study it.

  8. Hello, My name is Phil!
Some hobbies i like to do are Playing, Soccer, Drawing, and listening to music.
I like your post, they help me understand what that place feels like.
I am interested in learning your country.
Can i ask you a question? If yes, what does it feel like there when you were a kid?

    1. Hi Phil! Unfortunately I grew up in California , not England so I can't quite answer your question. My friends say that growing up here was kind of boring because there isn't a lot for kids to do in most cities here. A lot of the cities are super old so they had to find ways to have fun without being able to go to a mall or anything like that. I came to visit England for the first time when I was 10 and I was definitely bored. But that was also before people had iphones or a lot of portable technology (wow I feel super old).

    1. Hi Katelyn! What kind of music do you like? I love rock music and am actually in the rock music club here in Bristol! I have been all over England and I think that I have been to every major tourist attraction here. I think my favorite places though are Bristol and Stratford-Upon-Avon (where Shakespeare was from). I also really like the city of Brighton in the south of England because they have a boardwalk with lots of fun rides.

    1. Hi Natalie! Wow those are two amazing hobbies. I wish that I could have done gymnastics when I was younger. I love food so I definitely try to eat as much as I can. Portland has lots of food too though that you should definitely try! I will be back in Oregon in September because I have to go back to California in June and then I am going to Honduras for two months. Sadly I won't be able to visit you all in person, but I will definitely be able to skype your class.

    1. Hi Jason! Dinosaurs are awesome and I bet you're an amazing drawer. We have lots of animals here in England that are the same as back home like raccoons, squirrels, deer, etc... Some things you might not have seen before though are animals like badgers or pheasants (a type of bird). Otherwise it's mostly the same as Oregon :)

  13. Hi, my name is Gina. Some hobbies I enjoy are drawing, swimming, etc. Something I want to know about England is what the weather is like

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Gina! I love to swim as well! England is pretty well known for being rainy all the time, but I would say that it rains less than Portland. It changes based on where you live, but Bristol has been very nice all year. We have had very little rain and the last few weeks have been super sunny and amazing. It's definitely cold though even when it is sunny most of the time and it rains more at night. Have you ever been to the Oregon coast? That is what most of England is like. Bristol is more like Seattle because it will be rainy one moment and then five minutes later it's sunny.

Now I mostly do scuba diving, hiking, surfing, and I watch a lot of netflix haha. I think that the best food in England is their take on Indian food. I love the butter chicken here. It's actually the national dish! You can also get amazing butter chicken from some of the food carts in downtown Portland if you ever decide to try it :)

    1. Hi Emma! Wow 11 siblings is a lot. I only have four and I think that's enough for me haha. It would be very nice to meet you as well. Hmmm the best restaurant in England? Well England is a very big country but I can tell you my favorite restaurant in Bristol. It's called Seregio's and it's a super small Italian restaurant close to my flat. They have amazing food and it's not very expensive (which is nice because Bristol can be very expensive). The owner is also super nice and always gives me something for free when I come in.
